I just e-mailed my wife a love poem. Ok I cut a love poem off an internet site and slightly modified it and e-mailed that to her.
However, I have begun to realize as I reflect on Song of Songs that in our religiousness and desire to live in “truth” that we have lost a language of intimacy with Jesus. I desire to get some of this language back in my life with my creator and my wife.
This language of intimacy is looked down upon in some religious circles. Its seen as “feel good” or emotional or maybe “fleshy”. Song of Songs is considered a wisdom book. Even though God is not mentioned one time, he is woven in and out of the entire book as his great provision of campanionship is referred to. Lets read song of songs:
1 How beautiful your sandaled feet,
O prince’s daughter!
Your graceful legs are like jewels,
the work of a craftsman’s hands.
2 Your navel is a rounded goblet
that never lacks blended wine.
Your waist is a mound of wheat
encircled by lilies.
3 Your breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle.
4 Your neck is like an ivory tower.
Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon
by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
looking toward Damascus.
5 Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.
Your hair is like royal tapestry;
the king is held captive by its tresses.
6 How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
O love, with your delights!
7 Your stature is like that of the palm,
and your breasts like clusters of fruit.
Wow, what wonderful poetry and imagery.
Then this dude gets an idea based on his great love for his beloved.
8 I said, “I will climb the palm tree;
I will take hold of its fruit.”
May your breasts be like the clusters of the vine,
the fragrance of your breath like apples,
This is the Holy inspired word of God.
I love you Sue!
So in light of this language of intimacy: Below is a love letter from Ronald Reagan to Nancy when he was aboard Air Force 1:

Dear First Lady
I know tradition has it that on this morning I place cards Happy Anniversary cards on your breakfast tray. But things are somewhat mixed up. I substituted a gift & delivered it a few weeks ago.
Still this is the day, the day that marks 31 years of such happiness as comes to few men. I told you once that it was like an adolescent’s dream of what marriage should be like. That hasn’t changed.
You know I love the ranch but these last two days made it plain I only love it when you are there. Come to think of it that’s true of every place & every time. When you aren’t there I’m no place, just lost in time & space.
I more than love you, I’m not whole without you. You are life itself to me. When you are gone I’m waiting for you to return so I can start living again.
Happy Anniversary & thank you for 31 wonderful years.
I love you
Your Grateful Husband
