Bible Study and Notes: 2 Peter 1

2Pe 1:3  according as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called us to glory and virtue,
2Pe 1:4  through which He has given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, so that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2Pe 1:5  But also in this very thing, bringing in all diligence, filling out your faith with virtue, and with virtue, knowledge;
2Pe 1:6  and with knowledge selfcontrol, and with self-control, patience, and with patience, godliness,
2Pe 1:7  and with godliness, brotherly kindness, and with brotherly kindness, love.
2Pe 1:8  For if these things are in you and abound, they make you to be neither idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wow.

What a hard verse for me.  I realize now this is the moving your feet thing Pastor John talks about.  I know this is impossible without having a deep identity “in Christ”.

The definition of virtue:

The radical sense is strength, from straining, stretching, extending.

1. Strength; that substance or quality of physical bodies, by which they act and produce effects on other bodies.

2. Bravery valor. This was the predominant signification of virtus among the Romans.

If I have an identity in Christ then I shiould always have a bravery in doing all things. I should be able to take risks without bother of the reprecussions because my identity is very secure.

The definition of Knowledge:
1. A clear and certain perception of that which exists, or of truth and fact; the perception of the connection and agreement.

Everything needs to be salted with humility and meekness:

Definition of Humility:
In theology, humility consists in lowliness of mind; a deep sense of one’s own unworthiness in the sight of God, self-abasement, penitence for sin, and submission to the divine will.

I know all righteousness comes through what Christ did but I keep coming across verses like this.

The question is how do we do this without gaining a sense of WBR (works based righteoussness)?  Does anyone have any opinions on this? How do we add virtue, knowledge and self-control the proper way? Biblical truth seems to be abused today as much as it used properly today.

Finding our identity in Christ and keeping the Cross and Jesus Central are required I know.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is…
We are more sinful and weak than we ever dared to admit and…
We are more loved and accepted than we ever dared to hope

In Christ,

    WE don’t DO this.

    He DOES IT, in us.

That’s where a right understanding of the sacraments is helpful. For their power is ‘extra nos’…outside of us.
